Ubud, one of the tourist villages in Bali, is located exactly in the middle of the island of Bali, administratively belonging to Gianyar Regency, one of the districts in Bali which is nicknamed the arts district. Most of the villages in Gianyar Regency, such as Batubulan Village, Celuk Village, and Mas Village, have residents who have talent in the arts. We will pass all these villages if we travel from Denpasar Airport Bali to the center of Ubud.
Ubud, the name of the village and sub-district that oversees 13 hamlets/banjars, is approximately 30 km from Ngurah Rai Denpasar Airport and takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes via the Ngurah Rai street, Sanur. During the holiday season, the trip to Ubud will take longer because it is crowded with cars carrying tourists to enjoy a tour of Kintamani.
On the route to Ubud, there is also a Barong Dance performance venue which is performed from 09:30 am to 10:30 am. When the show is over, the cars carrying tourists will be crowded. Souvenir shops and art shops selling souvenirs such as clothes, batik, Balinese crafts, stone and wooden statues, gold, and silver jewelry, as well as painting studios are also often found on trips to Ubud.
In the 1920s, two European painters, namely Rudolf Bonnet from the Netherlands and Walter Spies from Germany, wrote a new history of the development of painting in the Ubud area. These two European painters introduced aesthetic techniques in painting. Ubud village is becoming increasingly famous as the birthplace of painting artists thanks to the collaboration between Tjokordo Gde Agung Sukawati the ancient king of Ubud and Rudolf Bonnet to form an artists’ association called Pita Maha.
