If you like surfing, we recommend you visit the beach which is not far from Kuta. Kuta is famous as a surfing spot, both for beginners and those who are advanced. There are many surfboard hire places available along with instructors who teach surfing for beginners. Take a surfing lesson is a good idea.

Not far from Kuta, there is an interesting place to learn to surf, namely the beach near Ngurah Rai Denpasar Airport which is often called the Bali Airport Reef. This beach is in the Tuban Village Area.

Bali Airport Reef, also nicknamed ‘Airport Rights’ and ‘Airport Lefts’, is a popular surf spot in Tuban, approximately 4 km south of the main strip of Kuta Beach. The surf spot’s name refers to the waves that form on both sides of the westernmost end of Ngurah Rai International Airport’s landing strip, which is just around 900 meters out to sea. It’s great for beginners during smaller waves but can build up to provide serious barrelling action for pros during south-easterly trade winds. Boat access is recommended, as these surf breaks are roughly a kilometer out from the shore.

Ride the Waves at Airport Rights

The Bali Airport Reef surf breaks are nicknamed as though facing the shore from out at sea, or how airplanes would approach the runway as they land. Airport Lefts, north of the landing strip, offers a hollow left that’s best with southern swells. Lefts are the longer among the two breaks, sometimes available up to 2 km north from the strip, which usually roll on for around 70 meters to shore. Airport Rights, on the other hand, spans only a kilometer long, with fickler 1-2 meter waves. Both breaks are usually best during the dry months, between April and October. As a beginner, you can enjoy the considerably rideable waves near the shore. For the greater swells of up to 2 meters, you can try beyond the reef, which would require a hired boat ride out. Rights are most accessible from the beach of Kedonganan, Jimbaran while both are reachable if you’re staying at a hotel in southern Kuta or Tuban, such as The Patra Bali, the Holiday Inn Baruna Resort, and the Sari Segara Resort. Crowds are unpredictable for both breaks, but it’s not as busy as Kuta most of the time, and the view of landing jets while you’re surfing can be amazing. How To Get Bali Airport Reef?
