Balinese people are a communal society, living in community groups. The composition of the smallest community groups in Bali is the village. In this article, we inform you of an interesting village to visit and research, the name is Penglipuran Village.

Administratively Penglipuran Village belongs to the Bangli District, Bangli Regency, Bali Province with an area of 112 h. The use of the area in the form of agriculture is 50 ha for agricultural land, 45 ha of bamboo forest, 4 ha of timber forest, 9 ha of settlement, and 4 ha of holy place and facilities general.

Geographically it is located in the central part of Bali Island which has a cool atmosphere. To go to this traditional village from Bali’s major tourist areas such as Kuta, Nusa Dua, Seminyak, Denpasar, and Sanur takes approximately 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes to the northeast by car. Passing Bangli City then turn left, the road signs are clearly posted.

Tourists visiting Penglipuran Village usually continue their tour to Kintamani, which is located approximately 21 km to the north of Penglipuran Village.

Beautiful Village Nature
As soon as you enter the road to Penglipuran Village, you can feel a peaceful and beautiful aura. The trees grow shady and the garden is neatly laid out. There are 2 parking locations, one at the main entrance which is specifically used for motorcycle and car parking, while groups arriving by bus are directed to park in the northern part close to the bamboo forest.

Penglipuran Village firmly adheres to the Go Green concept, all modes of transportation such as motorbikes, cars, and others are prohibited from entering residential areas. Push bikes are not allowed to enter this area. We once had a client who had plans to take pre-wedding photos in Penglipuran Village using an old push bicycle. In Indonesia, this bicycle is called ontel, but we were not allowed by the officers who informed us that all modes of transportation are prohibited from entering to make the village beautiful and unique.

Entering the Penglipuran Village area is cool and beautiful, which is arranged neatly and cleanly. The Penglipuran Village area is laid out with the Tri Mandala concept, one of the spatial concepts in traditional Balinese architecture. The area is divided into 3, the part that is highest and leads to the mountain is made into a sacred area by building a holy place such as a temple, the middle part is for settlements, and the lowest part is made into a dumping ground and grave area.

The highest part is called the main or sacred area. In Penglipuran Village there are 3 temples namely Penataran Temple, Puseh Temple, and Dalem Temple. The architecture of the temple is very magnificent and unique with its carvings. The atmosphere of religious activities can be enjoyed on major Hindu religious holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan, and certain days. Every certain day such as full moon, a joint prayer event is held led by a local holy man.

The unique thing about the reason to visit Penglipuran Village is that the entrance to the yard of the house is called Angkul-angkul Every house compound has the same type and design. There is a nameplate with the name of the head of the family and the number of occupants at each entrance. Visitors are allowed to enter the yards of the residents’ houses to get to know the traditions and daily life of the Penglipuran people deeply.
The yard of the house is very unique and consists of small buildings with their respective functions. In the yard of the Balinese house, there are several buildings, namely:

  • Holy Place called Sanggah or Merajan
    Merajan. This part is the holiest part of the yard. This place functioned to worship God and ancestors. Of course, there are some restrictions on entry to maintain chastity, such as for women who are menstruating, after giving birth, a period of mourning, and an engaged couple waiting for an auspicious day to get married. All these prohibitions are called Catur Cuntaka.
  • Balai Adat.
    An open pavilion building which is usually occupied by the oldest members of the family. This building is also used to hold tooth-cutting ceremonies, wedding ceremonies, and where the bodies are buried when a family member dies.
  • Paon or Kitchen
    Kitchens in Penglipuran Village are usually built in the south or west. In the kitchen, there is still firewood for traditional cooking.
  • Toilet and sewage area.
    Toilets and other dirty areas such as pig pens and others. Balinese people, especially in villages that still have space in their yards, usually have cages to keep animals such as chickens, pigs, and others.

Bamboo Forest

In the northern part of the village area, there is a bamboo forest with an area of about 45 ha, which is grown by various types of bamboo. There is a path in the bamboo forest. If interested, trekking in the bamboo forest at Penglipuran is worth a try while enjoying the beautiful and cool atmosphere. Some of these bamboo are used by the Penglipuran people for the construction of houses, holy places, and others.
